Floors Castle Gardens Expansion Plans – Update 30th August 2015
Floors Castle is to carry out major improvements in the coming months to the walled garden to further develop the visitor experience. The Duke of Roxburghe is committed to building the tourism business at one of Scotland’s finest stately homes in order to attract more UK and International visitors. As a world class visitor attraction we are always seeking ways to deliver improvements in the facilities for visitors and enhanced economic benefits for the local economy.
Our latest plans involve an exciting new development project for 2016. The Roxburghe Estates is investing in new garden features in the famous Victorian kitchen garden within the walled garden to create Scotland’s finest walled garden experience. Access to new areas of the garden will be provided including some of the wonderful greenhouses producing soft fruit and spectacular house plants. Plants such as streptocarpus are grown under glass and displayed at Floors Castle and always provide a wonderful show of colour.
This phase of development will link into our existing Millennium Garden to ensure that Floors Castle can attract more visitors and increases their overall experience.
Longer term proposals are being considered to enhance the retail and catering experience and to create a new visitor centre.
Unfortunately, as a result of these changes Floors Castle Plant Centre will close at the end of October. Whilst the centre serves the local area well, substantial investment is required to the plant centre building to bring it up to the standards of a Visit Scotland 5 star attraction which Floors Castle attained in 2013. In developing the gardens this will secure Floors Castle’s 5 star status and build on the growing interest in gardens and help to attract additional visitors. It is hoped that alternative employment opportunities will be available to enable staff to be retained but our existing staff (2 full-time and 3 part-time) are aware of our plans which will involve their current positions being made redundant. We are supporting our staff in this process.
We will be having a sale over the next few weeks at the Floors Castle Plant Centre including exclusive events for Roxburghe card holders to be announced shortly.
Commenting on the decision, the Duke of Roxburghe said: ‘We have been very clear about our ambitions to make our world renowned attraction even better and improve the visitor experience at Floors Castle to build on its reputation as one of Scotland’s leading world class destinations. As one of largest employers in the local area with over 150 employees the decision to close the Plant Centre entailing redundancy of the staff affected was extremely difficult and regrettable. Our investment plans in redeveloping the gardens will establish them as a major attraction in their own right and in the longer term we believe provide opportunities to create new jobs.’
The plant centre will cease trading on 1st November 2015 and we intend to open our new walled garden experience in summer 2016
