On 1 February the Salmon fishing season reopens on the River Tweed and for the ghillies, fisherman and local community, it can’t come soon enough!
Sporting Pursuits are a major source of income not only for Roxburghe Estates but for Scotland as a whole. The River Tweed Commission suggests the output generated from the River Tweed is worth just under £18 million to the Scottish Borders alone. Local hotels, restaurant (and pubs!) and shops all benefit greatly when the season gets underway.
Fishing is so important to the local community that Eoin Fairgrieve (one part of the Scottish Fly casting team that won the Emerald World Speycasting Championship) and the Tweed Foundation have started a fantastic initiative called TweedStart. Tweedstart is a non-profit making organisation that aims to teach people of all ages how to fish as well as the importance of habitat management and community ties.

Fishing on the River Tweed is a privilege indeed. Its world-famous reputation sees anglers travelling from far and wide to enjoy the tranquil banks and prolific fishing pools. For many, catching a salmon on the Tweed is the highlight of their fishing career.
Head Boatman, Colin Bell, is looking forward eagerly to the start of the season. Our first customers of the season will be Mattias Helde and his companions who have become regular customers and good friends. In 2012, Mattias produced a wonderful video to demonstrate their exploits on the River. It is well worth watching even if you’re not a fisherman.
